Flooring for Stanwood's Damp Climate
Moisture decides how long a floor lasts in western Washington, and most of it comes from below.
Stanwood's wet season runs for months, and that moisture works its way into houses. In homes over a crawl space, ground moisture rises into the subfloor when the vapor barrier is missing or torn. That moisture can cup hardwood, swell laminate seams and trap mildew under vinyl. On concrete slabs, moisture coming up through the concrete can break down adhesives.
We are a water damage company, so moisture testing is routine for us. We take readings on the subfloor or slab before recommending a product, and we check the crawl space when the readings call for it. If the subfloor is damaged from an old leak, we replace it. It costs far less to fix now than to tear out a new floor later.
Many Stanwood homes date from 1990 to 2009, based on U.S. Census data, and a lot of them still have original carpet and sheet vinyl. Swapping those for luxury vinyl plank or hardwood is one of the most common updates we see. We match the product to each room: water-resistant floors in kitchens, baths and entries, and warmer materials where they will be appreciated most.
Our process
How Flooring Installation Works
Five steps from choosing a floor to walking on it.
Measure and choose the flooring
We measure each room, note transitions and doorways, and talk about how the space gets used. Then we help you compare materials by durability, water resistance and budget. You get a written estimate before anything is ordered.
Remove the old flooring
Furniture is moved as planned, and the old flooring comes out down to the subfloor. We protect nearby rooms from dust. Old adhesive and fasteners are cleaned up so nothing telegraphs through the new floor.
Test and prepare the subfloor
We take moisture readings and check the subfloor for soft spots, damage and squeaks. High spots are ground down and low spots are filled to meet the product's flatness requirements. Damaged sections are replaced.
Install the new floor
Underlayment goes down where the product needs it, and the layout is planned to avoid thin slivers at walls. The flooring is installed with the expansion gaps and fastening the manufacturer requires. That protects your warranty.
Trim, transitions and walkthrough
Baseboards, quarter round and transition strips finish the edges. Doors are trimmed where the new floor is taller. We walk the rooms with you and go over care and cleaning.
Flooring types
Flooring We Install
Each material handles moisture, wear and cost differently. We help you match it to the room.
Luxury vinyl plank
Waterproof-core vinyl plank handles spills and wet boots well, which makes it a strong choice for kitchens, baths and entries. It looks like wood or stone and is comfortable underfoot. It still needs a flat, dry subfloor.
Hardwood and engineered wood
Solid hardwood can be refinished many times but reacts to moisture. Engineered wood is more stable and suits more rooms. Both need a dry subfloor and time to acclimate before installation.
Laminate
Laminate is affordable and scratch-resistant, which suits busy households and pets. Water resistance varies a lot by product, so we steer you to the right one for each room. Standing water at the seams is its main weakness.
Tile
Porcelain and ceramic tile are ideal for bathrooms, laundry rooms and entries. Tile needs a stiff, flat subfloor to prevent cracks. We check the framing and prepare the floor before setting it.
Flooring FAQ
Flooring Installation Questions, Answered
Common questions about flooring installation in Stanwood, WA.
How long does flooring installation take?
Many rooms can be done in one to three days once materials arrive. Subfloor repairs, tile work or a whole-house project take longer. Hardwood may also need a few days on site to acclimate before installation.
What flooring is best for kitchens and bathrooms?
Waterproof luxury vinyl plank and porcelain tile are the most practical choices. Both handle spills and humidity well. Solid hardwood and many laminates are better kept out of rooms where water sits on the floor.
Can you install new flooring over my old floor?
Sometimes, but we usually recommend removing it. Removal lets us check the subfloor for moisture and damage. It also avoids height problems at doors, cabinets and transitions.
Why do you test the subfloor for moisture?
Moisture is the most common reason new floors cup, swell or grow mildew underneath. A moisture reading tells us whether the subfloor is ready or needs drying or repair first. It protects both the floor and its warranty.
Can you replace flooring after water damage?
Yes. We dry the structure, replace damaged subfloor and install the new flooring. When a sudden leak caused the damage, we document it for your insurance claim.
Is hardwood a good idea in Stanwood's climate?
It can be, with the right prep. The subfloor and crawl space need to stay dry, and the wood needs time to acclimate. Engineered wood is often the safer choice over crawl spaces and concrete.
